RS Media: Feature Round-upPosted by Khalid J Hosein on Thursday, 5 October 2006
The latest robot from WowWee Robotics, the RS Media, is chock full of features, and as the name suggests, particularly multimedia-related ones. This article sums up most of the notable features of the RS Media.
At first glance, the RS Media has a look and feel like the Robosapien, but starts to differ when you start to look at its feature set. First of all, square in the middle of its chest is a 1.9" TFT LCD color screen that can playback your MPEG-4 videos, as well as 1 of the 3 embedded Java games, JPEG pictures, and browse the files and folders you have stored. The RS Media can also record and playback MP3 audio files through its 11W stereo speaker system that includes a woofer, and yes, it can record MPEG-4 videos using the camera mounted in its head. If the built-in memory is not enough for you, there is also an SD card slot that takes up to a 1GB card.
Like the Robosapien, RS Media has the ability to interact with its environment. To this end, it has a camera, 2 microphones for picking up sound, a sensor to tell if he's being tilted, a grip sensor, touch sensors at the front and back of both feet, and vision sensors that can detect objects and movements and differentiate between colors. Interestingly, RS Media has the ability to interact with other WowWee robots including the Roboreptile, the Robosapien V2, Robopet, Roboraptor and of course, other RS Media's too! RS Media interacts differently with each robot
and has many different types of interactions with each one.
Although the RS Media has a remote controller, performing extensive programming or managing your media could be a bit troublesome, so it comes with a full-featured PC application that connects to the RS Media via a USB cable. The PC application actually contains multiple applications: a 3D editor to create animations, a personality editor that lets you tweak one of the 4 default personalities or build your own, a macro editor that lets you program your own customized movement sequences, and a media organizer to manipulate all of your multimedia.
