WowWee's Spyball Rolls Into Our Hands, Previewed At CES 2009

Rovio's new little brother (or sister, depending on what you name your Spyball) is just what you need to keep tabs on what's going on throughout your home.  I was lucky to get a chance to feast my peepers on this awesome new mobile webcam at WowWee's display at the International CES Show!

WowWee Spyball At CES 2009

Here's the Spyball sitting on top of its box.

A closer, front view, with the camera popped up.

Hopefully, this shot will give you a good idea of the size of Spyball.  It's a LOT smaller than I expected, which was a pleasant surprise.  I'm guessing the metal wheel on the back will be replaced in the final production version with a black, plastic variant.  I had hypothesized that the Spyball would use a gyroscope type system to keep the camera on top while it rolled, but due to the back wheel, I'm guessing that's not how it will work.

Here's a close up view of Spyball's camera.

Finally, here's a pic of Spyball's interface running on a Sony PSP - nice!

We'll follow up with more details on Spyball as they become available - we know you can't wait to see those tech specs and when you can finally get your hands on one!  Price should be between $150-$179 (subject to change) and availability is estimated around to be around Fall of 2009.

does it have a rechargeable battery? Is there a mic on board? Any video of the UI running on a PSP or DS available???

1. Hmm... good question. I'll find out. I checked my photo of the back of the box, which doesn't indicate anything about a rechargable battery or charging dock, but that doesn't mean it doesn't have one.

2. Unfortunately, I don't have any video of the Spyball... so the pics will have to suffice for now!

I have video of Spyball being controlled by the PSP in the CES 2009 Robotic thread. Here's the link

On the close up view of spyball, is there 2 cameras, a big and a small?

Peter Redmer's picture

I'm pretty sure there's only one camera.

Found out about the batteries... well, I found out that it isn't finalized yet. Since the unit is still in development (we saw an early prototype at CES) it hasn't been decided whether it will run off of standard batteries or rechargables.

Hopefully within the next few months we'll see some final specs to find out for sure. That being said, if they do decide to use alkalines, you can always use rechargables!

Peter How do they control spyball with the PSP and we can not control the Rovio by PSP.  When I try to load the Rovio site on the PSP the page goes blank..  I am assuming Rovio  uses active X and and the PSP cant use the active X control.. So how is spyball controlled by PSP?

Peter Redmer's picture

Well, since I don't have any final specs or information, that's hard for me to say! I'm guessing that either (#1) there's a special app available for the PSP from WowWee (#2) The Spyball interface doesn't use ActiveX or (#3) some other mysterious answer.

Sorry I couldn't be of more help, but it's still too early to tell. Once more final information is available I'm sure we'll find out!
