Yes, there was a bad batch of wire used by the Chinese factory in some V2s. I'd contact WowWee support/customer service as soon as possible. Good luck!

I have a RSV2 which I received as a gift from my son about 17 months ago. It has not been used much, but it has worked perfectly up until this week. It was last used about 5 months ago, when my grandchildren were visiting. When we tried to start it up, it would begin its start-up sequence and then stop, but not always in the same place. After about 10 attempts, I got the “bad motivator” message, and this prompted me to replace the batteries for the first time. Still no joy. After reading some of the posts on this forum, I decided to try to open it up. I tried again to start up, but got the same result. Then as I was removing the batteries, I noticed that the two AAAs in one foot were quite warm. This suggested to me that there was an intermittent short. When I got the body cavity open, I found many small crumbs of insulation from the wiring. The picture clearly shows that some of the wires are in excellent condition, while others have insulation missing or in the process of breaking off. In the right hand bundle from the leg, you can see that the violet and gray wires are in good shape, while the red, black, yellow, and green wires have lost much of theirs. Also note that some of the locations with missing insulation are well away from the robot body, and were not in contact with anything. I know that it is much longer than 90 days since I got this robot, but clearly WowWee used some bad wire in making up the wiring harnesses. I have been in instrumentation design for over 30 years, and have never seen insulation is such bad condition after such a short time. I do not have the materials or the tools to replace the wires in the circuit board connectors myself. I could install replacement harnesses (both legs are bad), but I really think that WowWee should replace this robot. This is a clear example of defective materials. Have others seen this problem?

THIS WAS FROM MY OTHER FORUM BUD.
Well I decide to play with my Sharper Image Robosapien V2 Christmas Day and what do I find after about 20 minutes of play?
Smoke coming out from underneath the rear torso plate. If I turn him upside down I can see a wire glowing red hot and that must be the insulation burning. Also, when I do this the smoke really starts to pour out. I'm going to stop playing with him before he really burns up.
Great, I was just about to make a brand new video with him. I went back to my forum and saw messages from people with the same problem quoting information they had gotten from WowWee about this. Apparently the first batch of V2's had this exact problem and most of that batch went to Sharper Image. I bought one of the first ones.
Fortunately I bought the 3 year replacement plan, but it doesn't seem fair that I have to use it to replace a unit due to a design defect. Since I paid $250 for mine instead of that insane $89 price Sharper Image had over Christmas, I'm really happy now I bought the replacement plan.
Argh, guess I'll play with my Roboreptile, V1, and Roboraptor instead. Not as much fun because the V2 is so much fun to pick up stuff with. I hope Sharper Image is open tomorrow.
UPDATE: It was still smoking after I turned it off for over 15 minutes and the batteries in the left foot were extremely hot. I guess a short developed in the unit.
What extra sucks is that the batteries were brand new Duracell D alkalines! I think I can keep the batteries in the normal temperature foot but I'm not going to try and use the batteries from the hot foot.
Robert
A LOT OF CASES LIKE THIS ONE.
My v2 croaked after 2 months. I think it's the motor board but it may be the controller. It stopped mid routine and smoke came from it's chest. Does anyone know where I can find a place to buy a junk V2 that is physivally broken with the electronics still working? I would like to replace the motor board.

Just to split a hair, here. A substandard wire is not a robot design defect, it's a raw materials or manufacturing defect.
If the wire insulation was damaged during robot assembly, it's a manufacturing defect. If the insulation was manufactured improperly, it's a materials problem for the robot, and a manufacturing problem for the insulation.
A design defect would mean that every copy made would have the same problem until the design was changed. If the root of the problem was that the circuit design pushes too much current through the wire, and it slowly cooks the insulation off, then that's a design defect.
In this case it appears to have been a materials supplier problem that affected some part of the production run. The affected robots all seem to have a lot of crumbling insulation, rather than a single toasted wire from a bad drive circuit.
That's little consolation for somebody who got a bum bot. It is an important distinction when talking about the overall product.
Unfortunately, we haven't heard any statements from WowWee with regards to what manufacture dates or serial numbers might be affected by the bad wiring. I haven't heard of any announcments of recalls or warranty extensions for affected owners.
There have been cases where an owner has stated that working with WowWee support resulted in their robot getting repaired or replaced.
Your mileage may vary.....yada yada yada

Well stated, MrScott. I agree that WowWee should publicize the serial numbers of the affected bots, because I think this is a potentially dangerous safety defect. Eventually, I'm afraid, one is going to catch fire or have the batteries explode. The only way we can influence WowWee is by bringing the frequency of this problem to their attention here on the forums.
I have several V2s that have the rotted wire, and I could envisionposting their S/Ns if anyone thought it would help. I don't know if the S/Ns are sequential or have date coding in them, but they should be trackable to the manufacturing lots affected by the substandard wire.

I think posting serial numbers is a great idea. If there are enough robots with this problem, surely WowWee will make it right. But if not, there is always a class action lawsuit.
By the way, where is the serial number on the robot?
In one of the foot battery compartments- I forget if it is the right or the left foot.

Ok. I found it in the right foot. The serial number on this RSV2 with defective wires is
28605WSHA.

Wowwee do not seem very forth coming do they with this problem, The least they could do is answer these emails, You can't tell me they do not know about this forum. This sort of thing needs to be addressed for future purchases of Wowwee products. My 2 cents worth anyway. Can't say I have had ANY problems with Wowee products, They ALL have worked with NO problems. But it must be very frustrating for those that do, Particularly when it's for your kids, They get very upset when this sort of thing happends. [So do adults].

hi emjic, I hope you get a response back from WowWee soon. Where are you located? It looks like these numbers are manufacturing codes, not really serial numbers; maybe equal to production runs. For example, I have a 28305WHSB, and someone else has a defective one from lot 28305WSHA.
Also, I believe everyone who has a valid purchase has gotten a replacement from WowWee, they just don't respond as instantly as a lot of people expect. How could they be more forthcoming? Since there's no product registration, and WowWee recalled as many as they could from the distribution chain, about all that can be done is wait for people to complain and return them. Our local TRU has one RSV2 still on the shelf that wouldn't surprise me if it had the same problem; but the outer box has no visible markings other than the bar code... (actually, I wonder if there is anything encoded in the bar code? anyone still have their packaging?)
Anyway, I don't see how WowWee do anything more proactive; if you have a good idea, lets hear it!

milw: Would it be possible to have WowWee list the product codes here that were defective so that anybody that has purchased one that is defective can cross ref the product code to their defective one. Just a thought.

I don't know, that is really a question for MichelleC et al. Here's the list I have so far (without names):
28105WSHA
28305WSHA
28305WSHA
28305WSHB
28605WSHA
29005WSHA
32005WS

This list looks to me like a list of batch or run numbers, not serial numbers. It is highly unlikely that all of a group of 6 or 7 numbers would have the last two digits the same, and the first three digits are not enough to number all of the RSV2s that have been built. We can not tell much else from these numbers, but WowWee probably can identify the time period and place they were built.
We might also want to keep track of whether or not the cause of each failure was actually traced to crumbling insulation, or if it is just a failure with no definite cause. However, other symptoms such as smoke or very warm batteries are probably caused by shorts due to the lack of insulation on the power wires.
By the way, I sent a follow-up e-mail to my original request for information to WowWee and have gotten no response. I tried to send a new support request, and it was rejected because I already had an active request. WowWee may not want to hear about this problem, but I really think they should make it right.
Any ideas for action items?

That's just what I said, about 2 posts before the list of numbers. Still, I believe WowWee knows all of the affected batch numbers, and ought to publicize them here in a sticky thread. I can PM MichelleC but about all we can do is ask; and on our own, collect the batch numbers of known bad units. All in my list are wire rotted.

I have this problem with mine too! I bought mine from Best Buy in Nov of 2005 right after it's release date. My serial number is 27605WSHA. Mine never smoked though. It just failed to start up one day. It has not been used very much at all. I contacted WowWee support And they are working with me on getting a replacement.
There have been some folks who got an out of warranty replacement on these defective RSV2s. It usually required sending back key components of the defective RSV2, so that the same busted bot didn't just move to another person for another replacement claim.
http://www.robocommunity.com/forum/thread/12815/WowWee-RSV2-replacement-delay...
If you contact WowWee Customer Service and specifically state that you have the same crumbling insulation problem that many other RSV2 owners have seen, you might get past the initial "no repairs" response.
Other than that, you're talking about a product that's several years out of warranty. When is the last time you got a computer replaced when it was years out of warranty, or a DVD player, or a TV, or a dish washer, or a..... you get the idea.

Yes, My claim is still open and I can add the info to them. However, I am absolutely positive that they well know what is going on with my RSV2. When it was working, I loved this unit! I am still convinced it is the most advanced robotic toy on the market today. I want it operating again and I will fight to get it.
I came up with a great idea to help people with this in the future. I have taken a large array of pictures so far. I thought maybe if I wrote down how I disassembled my unit step for step and use pictures to illustrate the steps, maybe people would feel more confident to dig in and attack the job. I am creating this "instruction manual" using Microsoft Word. I got a good start on it already. I will keep you posted as to how this project is going.
I suggest you package up your how-to as an article published right here on RoboCommunity.
The article editor isn't Micro$oft Word (no tremendous loss, there...) but it gets the job done.

As an article here is a great idea. It is a long way from done though. When I actually have it completed, I am going to have to have someone else who has also made this repair check it out for additional stuff I might have overlooked. Having the original copy on Microsoft Word, I can email the package to someone for close examination plus keep on file for future reference.
Only if your desired reviewer is Word-inated.

While I am sure that instructions for opening up the robot will be very helpful in fixing these defective robots, the real roadblock to replacing the bare wires is getting replacements for the connectors to the PC boards. Even if you can find a source of compatible connectors, the only types I know of require expensive tools to assemble them. If WowWee will not replace these robots, then they should at least provide new wires with the necessary connectors already attached.
