It's fallen, and it can't get up.

I was watching the Science channel and they were discusing robotics in the future. They talked about the robot Asimo and how by 2020 they hope to have one in every home. They didn't go into to much detail other than it was about the size of the average 8 year old. I just wanted to know what people think about Asimo and could they tell me more about him/her/it. I do have a specific question though. Asimo can connect to the internet. Now, all computers are hakable and all firewalls are possable to get around or through. So, when Asimo hits the global market wouldn't computer hackers and people who make viruses for "fun" start targeting Asimo. Wouldn't it be a matter of time before someone creates a virus that causes the Asimo to function impropperly. I was just wondering.
It's fallen, and it can't get up.

Thats the first time Ive seen that one! never thought that it could not get back up if it did fall, Well I guess Honda needs to do some reprogramming for that, lol

I think it broke an ankle. It's the rare bot that can adapt in real time to failed joints.
As far as "one in every home" by 2020, I hope there will be useful home robotics by then, but I doubt it will look like ASIMO. I think the robots will have to serve a real, practical purpose before the majority of the people are going to buy into the trend. ASIMO is currently touted as "a companion", not an assistant.
It's like the growth trend for PCs. The early ones were touted as just what the a family needed to balance a checkbook, keep a budget, or store recipes. Most families disagreed. Calculators, notepads, and index cards were cheaper and more reliable. It wasn't until e-mail, internet, and broad band web browsing that it became the "must have" appliance for most houses.
A house robot for most dwellings will need to handle stairs, so little wheeled critters aren't going to be the popular answer. There are other solutions to stairs than walking up them on two legs. For examples of other techniques, watch a toddler, or dog, navigate stairs.

Very true MrScott the unit must have a purpose and not just as a compainion, as walking on stairs are conserned for legs are better that two when it comes to robotics at least right now but then who know what will develop in 11 years as seen by the computers and they too are getting better by each day.

LOL like the way they come out with the barrier quick as if to hide him and pretend it never happened
Interesting points. I agree about being more than a companion. One in every home by 2020 was what they were hoping and shooting for. This was do to tho fact that (or so they say) as it stands rite now it is too expensive. By 2020 it will be outdated (very) and cheap. In the video, what happened. Ti looked as though it snaged a stair when raising a foot. And was that all it was supposed to do after falling over, freez up and do nothing. You would think it would at least attempt to get up or something. What would it do if in the future the homeowner is not home an it falls over. Just lie there?
LOL I guess it would have a security button on it saying "I've fallen and I can't get up" hehehe

I think lying still when it fell on stairs would be a good safety measure. It could damage itself even worse by trying get up again, then re-falling down the stairs.
One answer to the stairway question might be a device it could hook onto that could pull it up the stairs or help it somehow. Like those funny chair lifts for the elderly like in "Gremlins".
when ASIMO falls in the video you can see that it doesn't move at all while falling. Seems to go into a 'fall' mode where it would probably tighten or loosen up (not sure what would be better!)
