Is it possible to make RSM walk while on AC power?

Greetings all

Is it possible to make RSM walk while on AC power?

Yes, with a 6.5v power adapter.

I have a multi adapter with a 6v only option so I tried that, I was amazed he booted up and yes he walked...for about four steps then rebooted again and then again, probably not enough volts, I was a bit worried for a while as he then wouldn’t complete bootup on 7.5V so unplugged and then booted on batteries after that was ok on 7.5v adapter, phew.

You want 6.5v with at least 2amps. I think 7v with 3amps is ideal but never tried to verify it. any lower could damage the adapter.

Freddy.

Some RSMs won't fully boot on less than 3amps.

I found a 6.5v 2amp in a thrift store adapter pile for $1 and although he walks, he still goes to sleep and ultimily into shut down.

You could buy from ebay too but you might have to replace the tip.

7v 2A

I have not tried 7v yet to see if it is low enough voltage to keep rsm walking and keep him awake indefinitly though.

Is there something that could be done to the electrical internals?

There is a power board in the foot that has a orange wire that I'm guessing tells the motor board what voltage the robot is running on. If you somehow "fool" it to send 6.5v that might work. Maybe an inline resistor but then it might not work at all on batteries. I'm just guessing here, try at your own risk.

Gulp!

Hi,
didn't want to start a new topic, so that's why i will ask here- is this DC adapter good for the RS Media

No not enougth AMPS RSM needs at least 3.1AMPS

I got this one   http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/AC-DC-Universal-Mains-Plug-Power-Supply-Charge... Gives me a few more options.

Hi Cheapotechguy

That apadtor has 2 issues, it is only 1amp output which I think means it will not have enough power to run the RS media as in the manual is states a 3.1amp power adaptor is needed. The other issue is it is only set to 7.5v which means if it does work the robot will not be able to walk when using it.

The adaptor I use is a variable adaptor which can be set to 6v and 7.5v and gives and output of 3amps.

Running it on 6v allows me to get fully body movement including walking as you get when using batteries

Running it on 7.5v allows me to use the bot with out allowing it to walk but the robot stays awake.

I have found a variable adaptor and it is rated at 2.5amps output which should work but you would need to change the end connector. Here is the link

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/2500mA-REGULATED-MULTI-VOLTAGE-AC-DC-ADAPTOR-3...

If you can find an adaptor with and output rating of 3amps that way the adaptor would not be put under any strain and would prolong its life rather than it overheating due to it not giving enough output ampage

Hi

Just found a 6v 3amp adaptor which will work and will allow the robot to walk while plugged in

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/6V-3A-3000mA-5-5mmx2-1mm-5-5x2-1-AC-DC-Switchi...

And another with is a variable voltage adaptor rated at 3.5amp

Agreed

In the RSM manual it is recommended the use of a 3.1amp adapter, Mine wouldn't bootup on 3amps (some RSMs do) so at least 3.1amps is needed really.

Good find on the multi adapter that will enable RSM to walk on 6v or better still 6.5v that's if it has the right connector and the right polarity (probably has).

Hi Cheapotechguy

Here is the page from the manual and it says 3.1amps

So if you are using a 1amp adaptor it won't draw enough power and the adaptor may fail

So, if I get that one http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/AC-DC-Universal-Mains-Plug-Power-Supply-Charge... will he walk normally or he will just walk few steps and shut down?

or that one is better

I bought the first one in your post it worked ok for 7.5v RSM wont walk on that voltage and the next setting is 6v which isn’t enough to power it (mine anyway) at the time I bought it I wasn’t sure about ma=amps I now see its regulated up to 600ma somebody correct me if I'm wrong but isn’t that only 0.6 of an amp, how on earth he booted up on that I don’t know, the second adapter looks ok (not sure on the polarity, most adapters are + centre) it has the magic 6.5v my RSM will walk and DOESN'T shut down on that voltage.

I bought this one    http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Hama-Digital-Camera-2-5A-Multi-Plug-Mains-Adap... it ticks all the right boxes, right voltage for walking (6.5v) polarity and amps and plug size and is good quality, it has a 7v setting which is ok for non walking use.

Please note some of these adapters are only 2.5amps some RSM wont fully boot up (mine does) on that so there is a grey area, the manual says 3.1amps. I just did a test on my RSM on the Hama adapter I bought above, I got him walking, lie-down, sit up while playing a banging dance track and he worked perfectly.

I also bought this rechargeable battery kit http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Energizer-Universal-Charger-6-D-Size-3000-mAh-LLoytron-Batteries-AA-AAA-C-D-9V-/300638924634?pt=UK_Sound_Vision_Battery_Chargers&hash=item45ff79ef5a which does the job well, geez I've just realised I've spent £50 just to power the big bolt head!

Well, i tried mine with a 5v adapter at 1AMP and it only started saying will shut down because battery's low. But if you're saying that that one http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/2500mA-REGULATED-MULTI-VOLTAGE-AC-DC-ADAPTOR-3... will do the job I will buy it today. I am only not sure about the plug size- is it the one I need or not?

I bought this one http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Hama-Digital-Camera-2-5A-Multi-Plug-Mains-Adapter-/220921281559?pt=UK_ConsumerElectronics_Batteries_SM&hash=item336fef3c17 and it worked for me, the one above has the 6.5v setting and may be ok.

As far as I can see, yours(Hama) has the same 6.5v setting and the same 2.5A, which makes it the same. So i might consider buying the one you did- so I will be sure it will do the job.

Great advice, I bought the world wide adapter from maplin and he walksgreat on 6volt at 3amp.
